As part of its ‘Plan for Better’ commitments, Sainsbury’s are repackaging its own brand mushrooms in a drive to reduce plastic packaging across its product range.

Own-brand mushrooms will transition into cardboard punnets by the end of the month, in a move which is set to remove an estimated weight of 43 full London buses (around 775 tonnes of plastic).

Sainsbury’s product and innovation director Claire Hughes said: “As part of our Plan for Better commitments, we are trying to reduce plastic packaging across our own brand ranges.

“We are delighted to introduce cardboard punnets for our own-brand mushrooms.

“Making a collective effort with suppliers to increasing recycled content and recyclability for all customers has helped achieve our biggest ever plastics removal so far. The initiative reflects our commitment towards a healthier and more sustainable future as we continue to look at ways to innovate our packaging and reduce and replace plastic where possible.”

Sainsbury’s claims this will be its largest undertaking (to date) in eliminating plastic from its products and will help consumers to reduce their plastic intake.

Customers will see the change instore with thirteen own-brand products making the transition by the end of the month.
