Clear communication is the priority for this year after a “frustrating” 2023, an aluminium packaging chief has declared.

Tom Giddings, executive director of industry body Alupro, said setbacks last year included “unsatisfactory government decisions” and fluctuating prices for packaging waste recovery notes.

However, he described ministers’ commitment to a ‘simpler recycling’ consolidation policy as “a promising advancement” and hailed their consultation response on a deposit return scheme (DRS) as “a substantial stride forward”.

“For those working towards achieving a more circular economy, it’s essential to see 2024 as a year of progress, decision-making and action – an opportunity to build momentum and drive positive, proactive change,” insisted Giddings.

He called for higher collection and recycling rates for aluminium packaging this year along with progress in appointing an administrator for the DRS.

But Giddings added: “With new legislation looming and widespread change likely, communicating with clarity, consistency and creativity must remain our utmost priority.”

He said Alupro would lead by example but that consumer education was “a gauntlet that we all must pick up”.

“As we move ever closer towards a bright new future for the recycling industry, relevant, timely and consistent communication is more important than ever,” he concluded.
