Asda has become the latest supermarket to move from plastic trays to vacuum-pack film for beef mince packaging.

The retail giant said the switch would remove 67.6 tonnes of plastic from its stores each year.

Asda’s vacuum-packed mince has a longer shelf life, takes up less space in the fridge and is covered in 60 per cent less plastic than before.

The film-based packaging is recyclable via the supermarket’s 250 in-store collection points.

The move comes a year after rival Sainsbury’s switched to vacuum packs for all beef mince, claiming the switch would save 450 tonnes of plastic annually.

Asda sustainable packaging manager Jon Wells said: “We’re always looking at new ways that we can make positive changes that will benefit both our customers and the planet, and we believe that this is one of those changes.

“Not only does this improve shelf life and provide greater convenience for our customers, it also removes tonnes of non-recyclable plastic from our supply chain, reducing our carbon footprint.”

In 2022 Asda increased the proportion of its own-label packaging that could be recycled to 93 per cent.
