Capri-Sun, the popular juice drink brand, has announced that it will launch recyclable pouches in the UK by the end of the year.

The new pouches, made from mono material polypropylene, will be able to be recycled through existing supermarket front-of-store collection schemes, according to the company. Capri-Sun said that the move is part of its commitment to reduce its environmental impact and support a circular economy.

The brand, owned by Coca-Cola European Partners, sells more than 240 million pouches in the UK every year. The current pouches are made from a mix of aluminium and plastic, which makes them difficult to recycle. The new pouches will have the same shape and size, but will be slightly lighter and more transparent.

Capri-Sun said that the new pouches will have no impact on the quality, taste or shelf life of its products. The company also said that it will continue to work on developing more sustainable packaging solutions in the future.

The launch of the recyclable pouches in the UK follows a similar initiative in Germany, where Capri-Sun introduced them in 2020. The brand said that it aims to roll out the recyclable pouches across all its markets by 2025.

Due to being recyclable at front-of-store, the packaging will contain an OPRL label noting that is where they can be recycled.

Alice Harlock, head of technical and member services at OPRL said: “The launch will be a catalyst for the industry and well as benefitting consumers and the environment.

“OPRL research shows that, despite the cost-of-living crisis, recycling is still important for consumers, and we are delighted to have assisted Capri-Sun on the journey to full recyclability.”
