Medical science giant Bormioli Pharma is to launch a bottle made solely from recycled PET.

The Italian company has created the packaging item in partnership with hi-tech plastic recycler Loop Industries.

The duo have been collaborating for over a year to bring sustainable products to the pharmaceutical industry.

Nasdaq-listed Loop owns technology that depolymerises low-value waste PET and polyester fibre, including plastic bottles, packaging, carpets and textiles and even ocean plastics.

The resultant monomers are filtered, purified and polymerised to create high-quality resin suitable for use in food-grade packaging.

Bormioli Pharma tested Loop’s PET resin in its products and found there was no release of any substance deemed of toxicological relevance.

The final bottle will be unveiled at Pharmapack Europe 2024 in Paris this week.

Bormioli Pharma chief executive Andrea Lodetti said: “Loop Industries shares our values and commitment, and together we made available a new pharma-grade sustainable solution, showing even greater safety standards than traditional ones.”

Loop Industries founder Daniel Solomita added: “This high-quality packaging alternative raises the bar for responsible solutions and helps set a new standard for sustainable packaging in the pharmaceutical industry.”
