For paper and plastics, it was a week of little change, although there was some activity in the metals market.

It seems as we get closer to Easter, traders are waiting to see if this will lead to more material availability as people take the long weekend to head to shops and garden centres. But also, many have already traded for March, so are now looking to April to see if a new trading month brings differing market conditions.

As a result, there wasn’t a huge amount going on, especially as other economic factors and PRN/PERN prices were not seeing much change either.

Key FX rates were unchanged compared to last week at $1.27 and €1.17 respectively.

Recycled plastics

With no real movement in underlying prices or changes to PRN values, there was little going on in the market this week.

Trading was steady where it was occurring, but markets remain subdued.

It was reported that moving HDPE bottles was a bit more difficult with one major buyer temporarily not in the market due to maintenance.

Although the PRN/PERN price was down by about £5 or so, this had little impact on physical material prices.

Recycled paper

There isn’t much material around, but buyers didn’t seem keen to jump in so much this week.

It was expressed that the market reached a level last week and most trading happened at that level where it occurred at all. Prices were therefore stable.

Many have already bought or sold for March, and are now anticipating whether the Easter period will bring more fibre onto the market and whether there will be any more post-Easter demand for material.

Although many are expecting a quiet week or two before Easter, there is always the possibility that somebody breaks one way or another and the rest follow.

Recycled metals

Industrial metals were one of the only big movers this week with copper jumping by £150 per tonne and brass by £100 per tonne. Ferrous grades didn’t follow though, dropping by £10 per tonne.
