There was a little bit of movement in some grades this week, especially where deep sea export was required.

Exporters want to get material on the water in the next two or three weeks ahead of Christmas, so this helped to boost prices a little for grades such as OCC in particular.

Otherwise, much of the market is now looking forward to the end of 2023 and hoping that 2024 will bring something better.

Both supply and demand remain low and many are looking for indicators that market conditions may change.

By Friday next week, we’ll also be into the transitional period, so people will also be looking for indicators of what the PRN/PERN market may bring.

The pound was trading at $1.25 this week up from $1.24 a week ago, while it was at €1.15 from €1.14 last week.

Recycled plastics

Underlying market conditions for LDPE and PP grades brought the price down this week as finding homes for material remains tough.

There is a lack of interest out there for most plastic grades, but these two were down again this week. European and UK facilities don’t seem to have too much desire to buy and there is some talk of downtime over the Christmas period.

Some are finding it possible to send material to Turkey or Far Eastern markets for grades that are permitted, but are accepting low prices to keep material moving.

There was also a small drop in the PRN/PERN price, which helped contribute a little to price falls as well.

Recycled paper

OCC in particular grew in value this week as people were buying for December. Far East buyers in particular were keen to snap up material so that they could ensure they arranged all of the logistics to get it on the water before Christmas.

There was also a bit of help from a slight increase in the value of the PRN/PERN and deep sea buyers are also benefitting from good shipping rates.

Other grades were largely stable, although news & pams weakened a touch on the back of falling demand.

Markets remain challenging for many grades and demand and supply of material is reportedly low.

Recycled metals

Brass and aluminium grades both fell by £50 per tonne, but there was no change for others.
