Coca-Cola is trialling label-free drinks bottles in a bid to reduce packaging waste.

The berevages giant is selling Sprite in clear plastic containers with embossed logos and engraved product information.

The trial will see the 500ml bottles sold in 12 Tesco Express stores across London, Brighton, Bristol and Manchester until next month.

Coca-Cola said that although the traditional labels were fully recyclable, removing them would cut down on the amount of material entering the waste stream.

“Through our ambitious World Without Waste strategy, we want to reduce the amount of packaging we use by focusing on new innovations and collecting and recycling one bottle or can for each one we sell by 2030,” said the firm.

“In a short UK trial, we’re stripping off the labels from our Sprite bottles to help simplify the recycling process.”

Four of the eight trial stores will feature accompanying point-of-sales materials and signage, while the remaining four will have no additional marketing. A further store in each region will stock traditional bottles as a point of comparison.

“This will enable us to directly assess the impact of the new bottles, and to see what our retailers and consumers think,” said Coca-Cola.
