India confirms ban on import of recycled PET flake

Recycled PET flake imports are banned, the Indian Government has confirmed.

In a move to clarify its order of 1 March 2019, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change has revealed that imports of all types of recycled plastic are not allowed.

This follows increases in the amount of recycled PET flake that was being imported into India.

Between April 2018 and February 2019, 99,545 tonnes of PET flake had been sent to India from countries including UK, USA, France, Japan, Spain, Canada, Germany, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Almost half of this (46%) had actually been exported from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

With India generating almost 26,000 tonnes of plastic per day, its Government wants to ensure that almost all its domestic plastic is recycled as part of its Made in India programme.
