April was a weaker month for paper grade exports with OCC, news & pam and mixed all seeing lower tonnage leave the UK than the month before.

April was the weakest month for paper grade exports since November 2020 with a total of 171,353 tonnes exported, compared to 191,028 tonnes in March. However, it was an improvement on April 2020 when just 143,253 tonnes was exported.
Turkey was easily the largest destination in April, with 52,689 tonnes up from March’s 32,309 tonnes. This was the best month for Turkey since December 2019 when 69,334 tonnes went there.
India was next best, with 35,726 tonnes down from 37,899 tonnes in March meaning exports to India have declined now for three months in a row.
Europe as a whole received 30,117 tonnes, increasing from March’s 26,689 tonnes. The Netherlands took 10,854 tonnes of this, up from 9,747 tonnes in March. Exports to Germany were also up to 7,070 tonnes from 5,758 tonnes in March. Spain took 4,244 tonnes, compared to March’s 2,787 tonnes, followed by France with 3,672 tonnes (down from 4,047 tonnes in March). Belgium increased its tonnage to 2,696 tonnes from March’s 2,114 tonnes.
Exports to Malaysia fell to 25,494 tonnes in April, compared to 44,228 tonnes the month before.
Indonesia imported less with 12,587 tonnes, down from March’s 18,939 tonnes.
Thailand also dropped to 10,812 tonnes from 18,837 tonnes in the previous month.
Vietnam took just 3,356 tonnes from the UK, compared to 10,798 tonnes in March. This was the lowest total since September 2019.

Mixed paper grade exports fell to 114,807 tonnes in April from 129,589 tonnes in March. This was the lowest total since June 2020.
India increased its imports to 44,528 tonnes, from 38,533 tonnes in March.
However, EU exports dropped to 32,562 tonnes in April from 39,426 tonnes in the previous month. The majority of this went via the Netherlands with 24,214 tonnes, down from 26,743 tonnes in March. Exports to Germany halved to 4,037 tonnes from 8,178 tonnes in March. France also dropped to 3,016 tonnes from 3,396 tonnes in the preceding month.
Thailand was the next best destination with 15,721 tonnes, although this dropped by almost 50% from March’s 30,266 tonnes.
Indonesia was broadly similar with 10,625 tonnes from 10,845 tonnes in March.
Vietnam increased though to 4,950 tonnes, from March, 1,725.
Malaysia imported 3,938 tonnes, down from March’s 5,807 tonnes.

News & Pams – Commodity code 470730
After a strong month in March, news & pams paper grade exports dropped to more normal levels.
In April, 13,734 tonnes were exported, down from 21,746 tonnes in March.
India was the main destination with 5,299 tonnes, down from 7,327 tonnes in March.
April saw a total of 4,915 tonnes head to the EU, down from 8,667 tonnes in the month before. The Netherlands fell to 2,119 tonnes from 3,708 tonnes in March, while Germany dropped back to 1,130 tonnes in April from 1,478 tonnes the month before.
Malaysian imports from the UK fell to 1,659 tonnes from 1,978 tonnes in March.
Turkey was the only other destination above 1,000 tonnes with 1,369 tonnes in April, increasing from the month before from 857 tonnes.
