November 2021 was a weaker month for OCC and mixed paper, the latest export data from HMRC shows.

However, news & pams increased on the previous month.

A total of 179,564 tonnes of OCC was exported from the UK in November 2021, down from October’s 200,279 tonnes. Mixed paper exports also dropped to 137,779 tonnes from 147,450 tonnes in the previous month.

Exports of news & pam increased to 35,836 tonnes compared to 32,410 tonnes in October. This was also the highest amount exported in 2021 with just December’s data left to come in next month.

OCC – Commodity code 470710

As in October, Turkey was easily the main buyer of OCC importing 51,758 tonnes, up considerably from 37,374 tonnes the month before.

EU exports were only slightly down from October with 34,577 tonnes in November down from 35,532 tonnes in the preceding month.

Of this, 13,476 tonnes reached buyers in The Netherlands, up from 12,805 tonnes in October. Exports to Germany fell in November to 8,619 tonnes from 9,355 tonnes the month before.

France bought 6,473 tonnes, increasing from October’s 5,679 tonnes.

Spain though fell in November to 2,423 tonnes from 3,252 tonnes in the earlier month.

Poland seems to be consistently increasing its purchases of OCC. For the first time it took more than 2,000 tonnes in November with 2,057 tonnes, up from October’s 1,755 tonnes.

Malaysia dropped to 28,528 tonnes in November compared to 33,907 tonnes in October.

India increased its purchases of OCC though to 27,368 tonnes from October’s 18,255 tonnes. This was the most India had bought of this grade since June 2021.

Thailand followed with 15,595 tonnes in November, halving from October’s 31,354 tonnes.

Vietnam also fell considerably to 11,568 tonnes from 26,114 tonnes in the preceding month.

It was the same for Indonesia which dropped to 7,041 tonnes in November, compared to October’s 13,652 tonnes.

China somehow continues to import material despite its ban, taking 2,250 tonnes, lower than 3,250 tonnes in October.

Mixed paper – Commodity code 470790

The EU continued to be the biggest buyer of mixed again in November buying 43,770 tonnes, although this dropped from October’s 51,460 tonnes.

Most of this went to The Netherlands with 26,508 tonnes down from 33,825 tonnes in October.

Germany was virtually unchanged in November with 10,027 tonnes, compared to 10,139 tonne the month before.

France was only a touch down with 5,651 tonnes in November, compared to 5,713 tonnes in October.

Thailand was the main buyers after the EU with 36,579 tonnes, dropping from October’s 38,976 tonnes.

India was at 24,080 tonnes in November, increasing from 17,591 tonnes the previous month.

Next was Indonesia with 15,255 tonnes, falling back from October’s 19,553 tonnes.

Vietnamese imports from the UK also dropped to 9,524 tonnes in November from 13,788 tonnes the month before.

Malaysia took 4,539 tonnes up from October’s 2,625 tonnes.

Bangladesh imported more than 1,000 tonnes for the first time since April 2020 taking 1,400 tonnes compared to just 430 the month before.

News & Pams – Commodity code 470730

With 24,920 tonnes, the EU was again the dominant importer of UK news & pams, up from 22,431 tonnes in October.

The vast majority of this went to Germany with it taking 18,303 tonnes, up from 14,325 tonnes in October.

Exports from the UK via The Netherlands dropped to 4,015 tonnes in November from 5,075 tonnes the month before.

France was pretty much unchanged in November with 1,415 tonnes compared to October’s 1,402 tonnes.

India was the only other destination above 1,000 tonnes with it buying 8,090 tonnes, increasing from 7,049 tonnes in October.
