Please note this report just focuses on the waste polymers of ethylene commodity code (391510), as exports of other plastics are relatively small in volume
November’s data from HMRC shows that exports of this grade increased for the fourth month in a row.
While not matching the much higher numbers seen in February, March and April of 2021 (approximately 31,507 tonnes, 35,310 tonnes and 47,850 tonnes respectively), it is at least a positive compared to the low 15,438 tonnes seen in August.
Indeed, 21,612 tonnes was exported from the UK in November 2021, compared to 20,088 tonnes the month before.
With 15,200 tonnes, the majority of this went to European countries. This was an increased on October’s 14,689 tonnes.
The Netherlands was the most significant destination with 5,275 tonnes going there, down from 5,855 tonnes in October.
German purchases increased to 1,998 tonnes, up from October’s 1,315 tonnes.
Spain dropped though in November to 1,711 tonnes from 2,601 tonnes the month before.
Belgium was a touch down at 1,436 tonnes, compared to October’s 1,553 tonnes.
France increased its imports though to 1,411 tonnes from 977 tonnes in the preceding month.
Greece was also up taking 1,139 tonnes – a big jump on October’s 475 tonnes.
Outside of the EU, Turkey was the main buyer jumping up to 3,579 tonnes, from 1,920 tonnes in October. This was the best month for Turkey since 8,737 tonnes went there in May 2021.
Singapore also increased its UK imports with 1,572 tonnes leaving here for there in November, up from 1,267 tonnes in October. More than 1,000 tonnes has now gone here for three months in a row, when very little had gone there previously.
