These are the latest HMRC export figures for February 2024 for key paper and cardboard grades. Only destinations of more than 1,000 tonnes per month are included.

Exports of OCC to the majority of deep sea destinations in February showed a mixed picture compared with January. 

India and Indonesia saw exports volumes increase compared with January, with 32,292 tonnes and 22,262 tonnes respectively.

Exports to Malaysia saw a drop from 57,919 in January to 45,985 for February 2024, although it was still the primary export destination for OCC. Exports to Turkey reported under 50% of the volume received compared to the previous month.

Destinations across Europe remained steady across the board, with Germany showing an increase from 5,232 in January to 7,087 in February.

Mixed paper – Commodity code 470790

Exports of mixed paper saw a decrease in February with a total of 127,895 tonnes departing from UK shores, down from a total of 137,504 tonnes in January. India remained the dominant destination for mixed paper exports in February 2024, with a further increase of tonnage, bringing the total exported to 76,611 tonnes, compared with 57,386 tonnes in January. 

In contrast to January, exports to Vietnam and Thailand showed significant decreases with Vietnam reporting 9,236 tonnes compared with 19,138 tonnes received in January, and Thailand dropping from 20,729 in January to 6,831 in February 2024.

Across Europe, mixed paper exports saw increases broadly across the region.

Exports of this grade have continued to see steady increases in February, in particular India, reporting 10,608 tonnes of material received compared to 7,351 tonnes January.

A total of 18,426 tonnes left the UK in February, which is an increase of volume of exported material compared with 16,059 leaving the UK in January.
