Waitrose is replacing black plastic trays with multi-coloured plastic trays

Supermarket Waitrose & Partners has announced that it will use coloured plastic trays instead of black plastics.

The new trays will be a different colour every time depending on the material being recycled.

This is because they are being made from mixed coloured PET bottles and trays, meaning customs may buy the same product but with a different colour tray.

According to Waitrose, it also means that the packaging is much easier to recycle than the current black plastic trays that cannot be picked up by sorting equipment.

The packaging has been produced by Faerch and it is hoped that 500 tonnes of black plastic will be prevented from going to landfill each year.

It is hoped that Waitrose can remove all of its black plastic by the end of the year.

Waitrose & Partners packaging manager Karen Graley said: “This is an exciting example of packaging innovation that helps us move even more ready meals out of hard-to-recycle black plastic into a rainbow of recycled content that can be recycled again and again.”

The retailer recently announced that it will use fibre-based packaging for its Italian ready meals.
