Marks & Spencer has revealed plans to trace the journey of its plastic packaging.

The retail giant said it would be working with Polytag to see where the material is recycled.

Marks & Spencer released the detail as it announced a £1 million investment in the diet of cows that produce its milk, in a bid to reduce methane emissions by 11,000 tonnes per year.

The firm said it had a number of other innovations in the pipeline as it looked to ramp up its efforts to tackle climate change.

It said these included: “Introducing Polytag technology to better understand how much, when and where our branded single-use plastic is recycled in UK recycling centres.”

Marks & Spencer added that it would also pilot shoe recycling to test viability.

Chief executive Stuart Machin said: “By turning our obsession with innovation towards climate change and tapping into the entrepreneurial spirit of our suppliers, we can turbo charge our drive to be a net zero business across all our operations and entire supply chain by 2040.

“I’m excited by the big difference these small changes could make to some of the toughest climate challenges we face.”

Retailers including Aldi, Co-op and Ocado last year revealed they were trialling Polytag’s invisible 2D UV tags to get data on where their material was going.
